How Do You Make a Yorkshire Terrier Stop Biting?

Monday, September 6th, 2010

Well I have a little Yorkshire Terrier pup well about 6 month old pup and when Im walking he always bites at my heals (play bite) but even when I try to pet him he steal try’s to bite me what do I do PLEASE HELP I need to show everyone that my dog is a good dog!! Thanks

Try this site, you may find your answer here: http://www.cesarsway.com/index.php

Additional info: You have to become the boss. Right now your pup is taking over and will become the pack leader. What you need to do is turn him onto his back and pin him down until he relaxes. Never let him go out the front door in front of you. When people come over and he gets excited, calm him down before you open the door. Insist that he walk at your side or just behind you, NEVER in front pulling you. Move your lease up on his neck so that it’s just under his head. If he doesn’t follow you twitch the lease to jerk his head (not hard now) or touch him with your foot. Just to let him know you are in charge. Note: I said touch, not kick. Cesar teaches this on his Dog Whisper TV show, check him out. Hope that helps.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Having a Yorkshire Terrier in a Apartment?

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

Ok, so I just asked a question very similar to this only about golden retrievers, and so now I’m wondering how well Yorkshire terriers do in apartments. I just want to know what the pros and cons about owning a Yorkshire terrier puppy (and later a full grown dog) while living in an apartment. Also, just to let you know my apartment has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. Thank you for any information you give me! :)

Well my house is flat sized , 2 bed kitchen/living and bathroom :P

Pros: Their size makes them ideal for small space living, not getting underfoot, easy to find space for their bed/toys etc. If they have a mad 5 ins its no biggie! They don’t shed (long yorkie hair breaks off instead of shedding) and if cipped they don’t shed at all. They are easy to bathe and keep clean, important in a small space.

Cons. If you don’t clip you will have to groom daily. Be prepared to troop outside for toilet training. LIttle dogs can’t hold as long as big dogs initially and don’t fall for the evilness of pee pads, teaching a dog to foul inside is setting him up to fail and is gross to boot.

Yorkies are great small space dogs. They are happy to have a turn round the block or will walk for miles so you get a lot more dog for your size unlike other toy breeds :)

Can I Have a Male Yorkshire Terrier in My House With a Male Shih Tzu Breed?

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

I already have a Yorkshire Terrier at home and I want another dog breed may be a GSD or a Shih Tzu. Is it possible? Last August 1, 2010, My friend gave me an eight-week Yorkshire Terrier but by now I am planning to get a partner. GSD or Shih Tzu? Would there be a personality clash between these breeds?

well there will be territory issues they might fight to show who is on top and if there is a girl dog they will fight over her but it can be different if either of the dogs are used to being around other dogs they will be ok if not you can always scold them for fighting i would pick shitz tzu

How Does the Yorkshire Terrier Do Around Children?

Friday, August 27th, 2010

My friend has two kids and is considering adopting a Yorkshire Terrier. She wondered if this breed would get along with the kids in the house. The children are ages 10 and 12.

Yorkshire Terriers are usually fond of people and children. But owing to their size and the fragility of the structure, it is best for Yorkshire Terriers to be monitored when interacting with really young children. Moreover temperaments differ among yorkies and some may not prefer children like the others. However, if handled with care and a lot of love, yorkies are sure to give you back the affection and be great companions.

Can a Pittbull and Yorkshire Terrier Be Raised Together?

Saturday, August 21st, 2010

I have a boy yorkshire terrier that is a year old and I just got a girl pitt bull that is 7 weeks old. Will these two dogs be able to interact with one another? They are both inside the house right now.

Yes, it’s all about the owners and who is pack leader. Let’s hope that’s you.

What Kind of Food Should I Get for a Yorkshire Terrier?

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

Im getting a Yorkshire Terrier in a couple of weeks. What food is best to get for them?

There is no easy answer of the "best" dog food, but the short answer is, if it is a puppy, than a small breed puppy food. If it is an adult, than small breed adult.

I’m not sure what brands are available to you, but I can link you to a good dog food review site that rates foods from one star (wouldn’t feed it to their worst enemy) to six stars (manna of the gods). Poke around it and see what foods are available in your area.

My small breed students have had success with these brands:
Blue Buffalo
Innova
Orijin
By Nature
Organix
Wellness
Vital

Is It Not Risky to Have Yorkshire Terrier Puppy at Home With Kids Around?

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

I have three kids at home, my eldest is 4years old, my second child is 2 years and my youngest is 4 months old. This is my dilemma, my friend would like to give me one of his Yorkshire Terrier dogs as his gift for my birthday next month. But I am a little bit apprehensive of the presence of dog at my home with my kids around.

They are better with older kids. The dog can get seriously injured, die, or develop bad habits if not well attended cuz they required alot of attention , they are jealous dogs. But a new dog is like a new child. Yorkies are too fragile to handle them.

How Do You Feed a Yorkshire Terrier Puppy?

Sunday, August 1st, 2010

We just adopted an 8-week old yorkshire terrier puppy. I was told by our breeder to always keep for and water in his bowls. Water I can understand, but food? I have read online and in some books to put food in a bowl at a certain time, take it away when he/she is done eating. If he/she does not it after a period of time, take it away. What do I do? Is it any different for a yorkie?

You should have read up on this before you got a puppy. But. Feed her four times a day. Morning, early afternoon, late afternoon, evening. Small increments. If she doesn’t eat it within 20 minutes, take it up. She needs to be walked 20 minutes after she eats. (And various times throughout the day but I won’t go into that). Take the water up two hours before bedtime, this will prevent accidents througought the night. Good luck.
