I have a 6 month old Yorkie that I am trying (still) to go potty only outside. We have been trying the crate training and trying to get him to signal us with a bell that hangs from the door. But if given the chance he will go when we have our backs turned. We recently bought a clicker, has anyone had success with this?
My yorkie is terrified of clickers! So that wouldn’t have worked with him.
My method was to bribe him with his favorite treats. He has a specific “potty” treat that he gets when he does his business outside (He also has a specific treat for after bath time, he hates bathes!). Make it a HUGE deal when he goes potty outside. My dad and my husband made for of me all the time. I would squat down and praise my pup. “Yeah… good boy, very good potty, very good potty!!” Use a key word a lot so he can correlate it with the action. Now I just have to tell him to go potty and he runs to the back door.
He was about 10 months old before he was 99% potty trained. He still likes to poo behind the couch, but it doesn’t happen very often.
Good luck. They aren’t the easiest dogs to potty train, but it’s very possible.

clicker training is good but if the dog does not respond within the first couple of days to the clicker then it wont work.
training a yorkie is difficult, i had one who never got clean, we tried everything, on the other hand my friend has 2 and they are brilliant. when he pees ignore him pick him up and show him the place where you want him to go make sure you use a firm NO. make no eye contact!
when he pees in the correct place fuss him plenty he will soon get the idea………his bladder will also become stronger so he will hold himself!

my pup is in the pic
I crate trained my Yorkiepoo in about 6 weeks. I made a form and wrote down when she went potty when I took her outside to go. It helped me to understand her needs.
Using the crate training method coupled with gathering information and then determining her trends, it didn’t take long at all. I am retired and had the time to invest. I looked at it as pretty much a full time job, but it was worth it.
She is now 10 months old and hasn’t had an accident in the house in months. During the time we were in “training” she went in the house less than 10 times. In fact, I bought a gallon of SIMPLE SOLUTION stain and odor remover at PetSmart. When I didn’t need it they happily exchanged it for a bag of Eukanuba/Yorkshire Terrier kibbles.
I thought it was nice of them to do that.
