What Do You Like Best About Yorkshire Terriers?

Saturday, April 30th, 2011

Any information would be helpful! I have had my yorkie for about 2 years and i just absolutely LOVE HER! I just wanted to know what other people thought about the breed!
They are EXTREMELY ATHLETIC! I love it though! We have deer and she will chase the deer until they go way far into the woods! (Most of the time they aren’t afraid of her though!) Did I mention she is only like 4 pounds!

I’ve never had one (and can’t say that I ever will), but I love the fact that they are small dogs but they have that feisty terrier personality that most people fail to see when they’re looking for a dog that they can carry around in a purse. It’s as if they’re trying to prove themselves otherwise; they may look like fluffy little toys but they want you to know that they really are spunky, athletic dogs.

I Have 2 Yorkshire Terriers Can I Put Both of Them Together in a Crate to Train Them?

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

I have a pretty big crate and they both fit in there fine with room to move around and walk and lie down. Do I need to get separate crates for each dog? One dog is 3 months and the other dog is 9 months. Thanks.

They should do fine in the same crate and will probably take comfort having each other. It’s going to be a little rough potty training them in the crate since you won’t be able to tell who is doing what. Just make sure to give them lots of positive re-enforcement when they eliminate outside.

Best of luck!

How Much Do Yorkshire Terriers Cost?

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

I had a yorkshire that I got for 1,000 dollars but we don’t have him anymore.
What I would like to know if they sell any cheaper instead of buying one for 1,000
preferably girl or maybe even teacup yorkies!!!

SIgh.

From a responsible YTCA breeder, Yorkies should be $750-$2000. http://www.ytca.org

Teacup Yorkies are a name made up by backyard breeders and puppy mills. The size designation does not exist and anyone using it cannot be trusted as a breeder.

If you want to spend less money, then rescue a Yorkie that needs a home. Use the link above and http://www.petfinder.com to help you find your perfect dog.

What Breeds to Most Yorkshire Terriers Get Along With?

Monday, April 18th, 2011

I have a yorkie he is two now. He only seems to like dogs that are.. uglier than him? He likes girl yorkies. But he doesn’t get along with dogs that are cuter than him.
He likes : Girl yorkies
Boy yorkies
Dogs uglier than him. lol!

It has to be the dogs personalities. If you’re thinking of getting another dog you should bring your yorkie with you and aquaint the two before EVER getting it.

Are Yorkshire Terriers Essentially Feminine Dogs?

Friday, April 15th, 2011

I’m a boy but I kinda like the Yorkie breed. Not to be sexist or anything even though it probably is, but would it be weird to see a boy walking around with a Yorkshire terrier?

If a yorkie is properly bred it is a big dog in a small body. They are terriers (rat catchers) and can be very feisty. Like any other breed it depends on the breeding and the treatment and training they get from their owner. One of my friends is a truck driver. He is about 6ft 2in and has always had yorkies. His wife on the other hand has a German Shepherd. I will give you one guess which dog is the boss. It is not the GSD. LOL

What Dog Is Better for Kids, a West-Highland White Terrier or a Yorkshire Terriers?

Thursday, April 14th, 2011

I really like both terriers so I want to know which one is better for my kids? I have a 13 year old, a 11 year old, and a 16 year old.

Well, that depends on you and your family.

Yorkies are very fragile, so you must have a relatively peaceful household. (At their ages, your kids should be old enough to be gentle with a toy breed dog, right?) Yorkies are energetic and can be considered hyper or frantic by some, although they don’t really need outdoors exercise. They’re very alert and loyal and make very good watch dogs, although most people aren’t intimidated by yapping. Yorkies tend to be quite bossy, so you must not make the mistake of babying them or they will learn to manipulate you! If you’re going to purchase a puppy, you must purchase from a high quality breeder. Due to their popularity, backyard breeders are mass-producing Yorkies that are overflowing with health and behavioral issues (like neurosis, separation anxiety, timidity). Yorkies make great little lap dogs, they love being with their family.

Westies are very sturdy for their size. Your kids can actually take the Westie outside to play like a "normal" dog. However, it isn’t unusual for overexcited Westies to be nippy, so the kids shouldn’t go crazy, you know? They’re very intelligent, but their independent nature can also mean that training can be pretty difficult. They also require regular stimulation to keep them from being destructive out of boredom. And due to their independence, they aren’t usually lap dogs; they can be, but don’t be surprised if your Westie prefers the floor on the other side of the room. Westies are energetic and were designed to dig, so expect a lot of holes in your yard. Westies also unusually have high prey drives, which may result in some dead squirrels in your yard.. Anyway, Westies are much, much truer to the "terrier" character than the Yorkie. They’re independent, prey-driven, digging, smart, energetic..

What Do You Know About Yorkshire Terriers?

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

hi its me again about yorkies. i need to know everything there is about yorkshire terriers. if you know anything about yorkies give me any thing from 1 little tip to 10000000000000 tips aany thing will help (i just dont feel like reserching) and give me really good answers and i will choose you as best answer

Actually, I have a 14 pound Yorkie and a pup who is
already 7 pounds at 7 months! They actually come
in all shapes and sizes as I asked my Vet.
They are very loveable but some are very hyper like
my pup! She was spayed and still hasn’t calmed down very much. I entertain her with a ball that is
called The Best Ball which I got through Amazon.
She loves it. Neither of them shed at all. They
sometimes like to follow you and get under your feet
so you have to be careful. Mine like to eat just
about anything, they are not picky. I feed them
Purina One which is good for their teeth and breath.
They can get bad teeth at an early age so I brush
their teeth once at night and feed them Purina One.
Yes, they need to be brushed and it takes awhile
to potty train them. I keep my dogs hair clipped
short, it takes awhile to grow back. I think they
are great dogs.

What’s With Older People and Yorkshire Terriers?

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

From my observations, it seems that Yorkshire terriers are very popular amongst people in their 50′s and above. Is this a failed observation or is there some connection there?

Yes, I know there are younger people who own Yorkshire terriers, but I seem to notice it more in the older crowd, specifically women.

They’re small dogs and easy to handle. They are also very yappy so if they see a stranger coming to the house they will bark to let their master know that someone is coming (:

How Often Do Yorkshire Terriers Need to Get Clipped at the Dog Groomers?

Sunday, April 10th, 2011

hello, i alread have a lhasa apso..and were think of getting a yorkshire terrier. So i’m just wondering how often do yorkshire terriers generally need a hair cut? we understand that they need to be brushed alot, but what about getting clipped? thanks x

Yorkies are beautiful dogs. I have one and he’s so smart, beautiful and loving. As for how how often you have to get a Yorkie groomed, a lot depends on how long you want to keep their hair. If you want a shorter cut such as a puppy cut or teddy bear cut, then you would need to get their hair cut about every 4-6 weeks. My dog has the puppy cut. The shorter hair cuts will help keep the hair from getting as many knots or tangles. Also, the shorter hair cuts help keep your dog cooler, especially during the Summer.
So you should get a Yorkie groomed about every 4-6 weeks. Also, it’s important to brush their hair once a day. This also helps keep knots and tangles out of their hair. You can also bath your dog about every 1-2 weeks, this helps keep their hair clean and healthy.
Yorkies are great dogs. You will enjoy having one in your family.
Best of luck. Hope I helped.
